Ocomogosiay!

I’d like us to start off by reading a short section from Act II that isn’t in the movie? Why? Why do you think they cut it?

Then, individually, I’ll ask you to write a 200-300 words response to the following question:

Choose 3 of the characters in Raisin and for each character decide on one adjective that describes what you think about them. Then, explain why you think that each character deserves that adjective by giving an example of something he/she does and why that action merits that adjective. Include one short quote per character. You can use this site to search for quotes in Raisin.

Post your short responses here. Make sure you cut and paste it in the Note box and title it with your name.

Next, I’d like us to answer questions about Act II in small groups.

Would life have been better for the Younger family if they had lived in Seattle? In A Raisin in the Sun, we see the Younger family of Chicago face racism and discrimination. What about life here in the Northwest during that period? Was life better for the large numbers of African American families who came to the Seattle area from the south seeking work? The University of Washington has put together the website, Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Project. This is a great resource to help you compare the Younger family’s experience in the Midwest to what it may have been like right here in Shoreline or Seattle. You will use a graphic organizer to examine issues of housing, employment, and access to education. Use the Segregated Seattle power point presentation to complete your graphic organizer.

Then, if we have time, we’ll look into the poetry of Langston Hughes and how it connects to Raisin.

HW: Nothing.

Eat your eggs!

We’ll start with some questions about Act I in Raisin to get our brains thinking about what happened in the play.  After we answer them, we’ll try and talk a bit about the characters and why they do what they do.

Next, our peer coach from Seattle U will lead you in a drama-like activity which asks you to imagine some of the moral decisions that occur and how events would change had they decided differently.

Post your short responses here. Make sure you cut and paste it in the Note box and title it with your name.

Finally, we’ll see Sidney Poitier do the last scene in Raisin and we’ll discuss the differences between his acting and P.Diddy’s.

HW: Nothing

Liquor or doctors?

We’ll talk/write a bit about Raisin before seeing the 2nd half of the movie. What do you think’s going to happen?

Then, we’ll do a few questions about Act I and talk about what the various characters want and deserve.

HW: Nothin’
