Then, I’d like to think about constructing a new cover for Of Mice and Men. See these examples and use the new Life Magazine Google archive (use the 1930s set and try different search terms such as ‘migrants’ or ‘ranch’) for help or just go old school and break out the pens and paper. Online use Seashore or Keynote and make a screen capture (command-shift-4).

When you are finished, email the result to micecover@drop.io. Title the work first initial+last name_micecover.jpg. So, my file would be nstearns_micecover.jpg. Or go here and upload the file.

HW: Have a great weekend.

So, we’ll spend the day preparing for the Of Mice and Men test on Friday. The idea is to help you get prepared with the knowledge and skills you need to be successful. Let’s go.

First, each small group will be assigned a chapter and will be asked to write 4 short answer questions of the type that could be seen on the test (not too easy, not too hard). Also, write one more thoughtful question that asks students to think about the right and wrong of actions made by the characters.

Then, we’ll try a little OMM Jeopardy. May the best team win.

Next, we’ll work in small groups and answer these Literary term questions in QuickieQ.

Continuing on…I’ll give you the three essay questions I’ll be offering on the OMM final. Take about 10-15 minutes to use the book or the online text to take notes and prepare to write the essay in class. You can use these notes on Friday. Choose 1.

What is John Steinbeck trying to say about dreams and plans in Of Mice and Men. Use at least 3 examples from the book to back up your ideas.

What is John Steinbeck trying to say about his vision of America in Of Mice and Men. Use at least 3 examples from the book to back up your ideas.

What is John Steinbeck trying to say about loneliness and friendship in Of Mice and Men. Use at least 3 examples from the book to back up your ideas.

What is John Steinbeck trying to say about Fate and Powerlessness in Of Mice and Men. Use at least 3 examples from the book to back up your ideas.

Finally, if we have time, I’d like to think about constructing a new cover for “Of Mice and Men.” See these examples and use the new Life Magazine Google archive (use the 1930s set and try different search terms such as ‘migrants’ or ‘ranch’) for help or just go old school and break out the pens and paper.

HW: Prepare for the test.

Take a look at the poem you’re presenting on Friday. Try and give a more or less literal summary of the poem. What are the parts that you don’t understand? What are the parts that you think are interesting uses of words or imagery? What do you like best about your poem? (200 words)

Then, we’ll spend a little time working on memorizing. We’ll spend the time we need to make our poems seem as natural as possible.

Next, we’ll see a short presentation on literary terms: irony, foreshadowing, and conflict.

Finally, we’ll answer questions about Chapter 4 in OMM and hopefully get a headstart on Chapter 5 in class.

HW: Read Chapter 5 and be ready to present your poem on Friday

that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. . . . With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us.”

–Chp.1 Of Mice and Men

First, I’ll do a little presentation on literary terms in Of Mice and Men. We’ll look at characterization and theme.

Then, groups will choose either George or Lenny and they’ll go through the methods of characterization and quote from chapter 1 a short sample that show that method and what it says about the character. Handout

Next, we’ll read a bit from chapter 2 and talk a bit about the new characters. I’ll then ask you to respond in a short writing assignment to the following prompt:

Take the discussion between George and the Boss. What happens? What theme do you think Steinbeck is working with here and what is he saying?

Put your answer here.

Finally, we’ll take some time to work in memorizing pairs and work together to get the poems memorized.

HW: Read chapter 2 (pgs. 16-37). Keep memorizing. Remember, we see each other for a full A-day Monday.

Next, I’ll ask you to create your own metaphor/similes. Finish the following sentences. See these bad metaphors for inspiration.

My sister is so smart, she’ like ________________.

The movie ____________ is so boring it was like _________________.

______________ is so attractive she/he _____________________.

I can’t believe my dog! He’s so dumb he is like a _______________.

My ___________ class was so fascinating that it was like ____________.

My __________ teacher is so mean he is like _______________________.

Then, it’s time for a metaphor, etc. hunt through chapter 3. The first team that finds 8 metaphors gets a prize!

Now, it’s time for the Moral Decision Making Paper! We’ll go through it and go hunting for decisions in OMM.

If we have time, we’ll read a bit from Chapter 4. Or…take a look at the 60 minutes piece: Was it Murder?

HW: Read Chapter 4. Be ready for the quiz. Start thinking up ideas for your own moral decisions and OMM decisions.

We’ll start up with some questions from the first chapter of OMM to make sure we understand what’s going on in the book.

Next, I’ll present a short Keynote about Characterization and theme and a bit about theme.

Then, I’ll ask you to write for me:

Write a 200+ short scene where 2 people are talking in a park. Use at least 3 of the charcterization techniques I talked about to give each of your characters depth. You’ll get 2 adjectives to choose from at each table.

Then, we’ll share.

Finally, I want to give you some reading time for Chapter 2.

HW: Chapter 2 and be ready for quiz on 1-2 as well as on what characterization is.

Then, we’ll take a little time to make edits and officially enter the contest.

I’m hoping to hear a few of the mp3s which were created. Am I crazy?

Then, I want to talk about Of Mice and Men. This will be our next unit and my plan is to read the novella, explore the themes, learn about literary terms and create short movies that demonstrate those literary themes. All by December break.

Let’s try an Internet Scavenger Hunt. Answer all of these questions on a Word document and be prepared to email it to me. For all of these answers, always explain where you got your information.:

1) What was the price of a coat during the 1930s when the book was set and published (1937)?

2) The book takes places in Salinas, California. Find a photo of Salinas then and now.

3) Explain what a work card is and how migrant farmers found work in the 20s and 30s.

4) John Steinbeck was a controversial writer. Explain why he was famous and why he was controvesial.

5) Where does the title “Of Mice and Men” come from and what does it mean?

6) Give me a few of the lyrics of a popular song written within a few years of 1937.

7) There have been at least 3 movie/TV versions of “Of Mice and Men.” Give me the names of three men who played George.

Eight) Find a famous painting painted in 1937.

9) Where and why was “Of Mice and Men” banned?

10) How did people dress in 1937? Find 2 pictures: 1 of well-off people and another of working class people.

Resources: Life Magazine photo archive, American Memory, National Steinbeck society, Prices: Then and Now, Surviving the Dust Bowl.

After we do that and share our answers, we’ll start reading “Of Mice and Men” in class.

HW: Read chapter 1 for next Tuesday.
