April 30th, 2009 — 10th Grade English
So, the big deal–both big deals, I guess–is that we have a paper due. And, we’ll have the final on All Quiet on the Western Front. Good Luck.
When you’re finished with the test, I’m going to ask you to do one final project for the book. The book cover as it is feels, well, dated. Using the Google archive of Life Magazine photos from WWI, please create a new cover for AQ as well as the back blurb. Use either PowerPoint or Keynote to create the front and back covers. When you’re done, save it here and make sure the title has your last name and first initial.
Finally, if we have time after sharing covers, we’ll talk about the ending of the book.

We’re close to being finished with All Quiet.
Writing time: 30 minutes. Reminders of grading points. Readers for those who need it.
Question preparation:
8 Groups:
1) Chapter 1-2 Theme: War Brings out the Worst in People
2) Chapter 3-4 Theme: War is Dehumanizing
3) Chapter 5 Theme: War Brings out the Best in People
4) Chapter 6 Theme: Soldiers are the lost generation
5) Chapter 7-8 Theme: War is Worse than Death
6) Chapter 9 Theme: War creates strong Friendships
7) Chapter 10 Theme: The Enemy is Just Like Us
Eight) Chapter 11-12 Theme: There are no Heroes
In each small group, Create a short quiz over your section: 5 Questions. Short answer…1 quote that connects to the theme. After your done, each group will present.
Then, we’ll play All Quiet Jeopardy!
Finally, I’m hoping to read the ending and have a short discussion about why it ends this way. Would a happy ending work?

So, first, we’re looking at rough drafts. You’ll need 3 peer editors.
Editor 1: Dialogue, description, and writing like All Quiet. Read and note where the writer has strong dialogue and description. If the writing could use more, suggest places where dialogue and description could help. Also, look for places that seem a bit more 21st century and should be changed to be more at home in WWI.
Editor 2: Evidence of WWI info…See where the writer has included information and specific details that remind you of WWI. Example: I loved my Grossflammenwerfer more than my own mother.
Editor 3: Grammar and Mechanics…Note typos and mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Then, I’ll give you some time to write.
Next, we’ll do a little work with Chapter 10, taking 4 quotes, summarizing them, and commenting on their significance.
Finally, I hope to get a headstart on Chapter 11 in class.
HW: Read the rest of the book (due next Tuesday) and continue working on your More Lies story (next Thursday). We’ll take a final exam on Thursday.

First, I’ll talk about a part of chapter 8 where zombies, wait, wrong book, where Paul confronts Russian prisoners.
Next, we’ll work in small groups to create a comic book summary of Chapter 9. Stick figures are fine, thought bubbles welcome.
Then, I’ll give you a chance to begin your More Lies stories in class. Remember, the rough draft is due on Thursday.
We might have time to read a bit of Chapter 10 in class.
HW: Read Chapter 10. Rough draft of More Lies story due.
April 15th, 2009 — 10th Grade English, American Studies
So, first, I’ll give you a bit of time and then we’ll present our short 3-minute skits. Act!
Next, we’ll do a little bit of writing. I’ll give you a quote about war and then you’ll explain what the quote means, connect it to something in AQ, and then tell us if you agree/disagree and why. Finished writing goes here.
We’ll also look at our next writing assignment: More Lies!
I’ll read a bit about chapter 8 (pg. 193-194) and then ask you about what is right/wrong to do about the Russians. I’m hoping to get a chance to do chapter summaries of chapter 8 in comic book form.
And…we’ll get a headstart on chapter 9.
HW: Chapter 9 NEXT thursday…first draft of paper due.
