Working for the Man

Did you miss me? Even a little bit?

First, I want us to make a decision about our book groups. Choose a book and we’ll read for 30 minutes.

Then, you’ll talk in small group using the following questions:

  1. What just happened? Explain in your own words.
  2. Who is the main character?
  3. What 3 words would you use to describe him/her and why?
  4. What was something that happened that surprised you or that you didn’t expect?
  5. What do you think is going to happen next?

Next, I’ll ask you to read this article about career planning and answer the following questions in a blog post.

  1. When does the author think is a good time for career planning? Why?
  2. What advice do you think the author would give to teens concerning careers?
  3. Explain what the following sentences mean and whether it might happen to you: “Besides the unnecessary pressure, there’s also the danger that the push to plan could backfire. Some of the most distraught e- mails I get from twenty- and thirtysomething readers come from people who committed themselves to a career path early on and then didn’t know what to do with themselves when it didn’t work out.”
  4. How much do you think schools should focus on jobs and job skills in the education they give you?

Finally, I’m going to outline what a résumé looks like (here’s an example) and I’m going to give you a little time to begin writing one.
